Conservation

Since 1910, conservation and environmental studies have been an integral part of Scouting America. Scouts have rendered distinguished public service by helping to conserve wildlife, energy, forests, soil, and water. Past generations of Scouts have been widely recognized for undertaking conservation Good Turn action projects in their local communities. Through environmental explorations, Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturers, and Sea Scouts visit the outdoors and discover the natural world around them. Many natural resource careers are born in Scouting.

Awards and Recognitions

The World Conservation Award provides an opportunity for individual Scouts BSA, Venturers, and Sea Scouts to think globally and act locally to preserve and improve our environment. This program is designed to help youth members gain awareness that all nations are closely related through natural resources and that we are interdependent with our world environment.

 

The BSA Distinguished Conservation Service Award recognizes Scouts and Scouters for ecology efforts and service to conservation in their communities. To earn the Award as an individual, youth members must earn a series of merit badges followed by a concentrated series of conservation and/or environmental education projects to be conducted in the member’s community or nearby, under the advise of a trained conservation, naturalist, or environmental engineering expert.

These awards represent a substantial commitment of time and energy by individuals who have learned the meaning of a conservation/environmental ethic. Any Scouts BSA, Venturer, or Sea Scout willing to devote the time and energy to work on a project based on sound scientific principles and guided by a conservation professional or a well-versed layperson can qualify for one of the Awards.

Distinguished Service to Conservation Award Master

 

Conservation Good Turn Award:  An opportunity for Cub Scout packs, Scout troops and Venturing crews to join with conservation or environmental organizations to carry out a conservation project in their local community. 

Take Care of Texas Patch:  Recognizes Scouts who are doing their part to conserve water and energy, keep our air and water clean, and reduce waste. 

Keep America Beautiful Hometown USA Award:  A youth program between Keep America Beautiful Inc. and the BSA that recognizes outstanding efforts of Scouts BSA members in their communities in regard to citizenship and environmental improvement; provides way for those Scouts to make a significant contribution toward keeping America beautiful. 

National Park Service Scout Ranger Award:  Scouts BSA and Cub Scouts can participate in educational and/or volunteer service projects at national park sites to spark their awareness of the national parks and to provide Scouts with the opportunity to explore the national parks and learn more about protecting our natural and cultural resources

National Outdoor Award- Conservation:  When a Scout excels in outdoor participation, there are awards to show for it! This program, conceived by the BSA’s National Camping Task Force, includes a series of six badges, including one for Conservation, designed to recognize a Scout, Sea Scout, or Venturer who has exemplary knowledge and experience in performing high-level outdoor activities.
